Japanese pop singer Ai Takahashi (aka Takahashi Ai, Ai Chan, Lovely, Tettekete, Takitty), was born on September 14, 1986 at Sakai, Fukui, Japan. She is associated with Morning Musume, Mini Moni, Sakuragumi, Happy 7, 7Air, H.P. All Stars, Elegies and High King.
Ai Takahashi is popular for her association with Hello! Project. She is the current leader of Morning Musume. She was a former member of its subgroup, Mini Moni, which was very popular. Ai Takahashi is also the captain of the Hello! Project kickball team, Metro Rabbits H.P..
In 2001, along with Makoto Ogawa, Asami Konno and Risa Niigaki, Ai Takahashi joined Morning Musume in their single "Mr. Moonlight - Ai no Big Band". Her first appearance on a Morning Musume full length release was in their fourth studio album named 4th Ikimasshoi!.
Ai Takahashi’s first appearance in a Hello! Project shuffle unit release was in their single, "Shiawase Beam! Suki Suki Beam!" (2002), under the group name Happy 7.
In the later part of 2003, she was part of the Morning Musume splinter group Morning Musume Sakuragumi that performed mainly slower numbers on the group's two EPs, "Hare Ame Nochi Suki" and "Sakura Mankai", and the shuffle group 7Air, which was a septet inspired by R&B.
Ai Takahashi first appeared in the group's movie Mini Moni ja Movie: Okashi na Daibōken! and its soundtrack in 2003 by replacing Mari Yaguchi in the Morning Musume spin-off group “Mini Moni”. Her famous nickname amongst non-Japanese fans, " Takitty", was because of the cat suit, complete with tail, she wears in the movie.
Ai Takahashi 's vocals became more prominent on the second and final Mini Moni album, Mini Moni Songs 2 released in 2004 and on Morning Musume's singles from their Spring 2004 release "Roman, My Dear Boy" onwards. She also had a duet with Tsunku on the cover version of Tsunku and Ayumi Hamasaki's duet "Love since 1999" on his solo album Take1.
Morning Musume's first single release of 2005 "The Manpower!!!" featured Ai Takahashi in a prominent co-lead-vocal role and she retained that role on the subsequent singles since then. In the summer of 2005 she became part of the shuffle group Elegies.
In 2006 Ai Takahashi played the lead role of Sapphire in the musical "Ribbon no Kishi The Musical" which was a collaboration work of Takarazuka Revue, a hit Japanese all-female musical group, and Hello! Project. The musical was based on Tezuka Osamu's manga that also starred v-u-den, Nozomi Tsuji, Aya Matsuura, and Natsumi Abe, along with Marcia and Kaoru Ebira of the Takarazuka Revue. Immediately after that, Takahashi released her first and only solo single to date, "Yume Kara Samete".
Following the then-leader Hitomi Yoshizawa's graduation from Morning Musume on May 6, 2007, the sub-leader, Miki Fujimoto became the new leader and Takahashi became the new sub-leader of the group. But on June 1, 2007, following Fujimoto's resignation, Ai Takahashi took over as the new leader.
In 2008 Ai Takahashi became a member of Hello Project's new unit High-King, a group created to promote Morning Musume's upcoming Cinderella the Musical in which Ai Takahashi will play the main character. It was announced in July 2008, that Takahashi and fellow Morning Musume member Risa Niigaki would play the 80s J-Pop duo Pink Lady in the TV Drama Hitmaker Aku Yuu Monogatari.
As of September 2008, she and Risa Niigaki have the second longest tenures of any member, with only Kaori Iida remaining in the group longer. She is also one of only four members to remain in the group for seven years or more (the others being Iida, Yoshizawa and Niigaki).
