Quick Gun Murugun - misadventures of an Indian cowboy

Quick Gun Murugun poster
quickgunmurugun-2009-2b-1_, originally uploaded by

Quick Gun Murugan (QGM), the dosa-idli-sambar loving pure vegan Indian cowboy, out there fighting baddies of possible multinationals trying to spread non-vegetarianism, is a sincere South Indian crusader against the cunning plans of arch rival and villain Rice Plate Reddy of the McDosa’s (a take on chains like McDonalds, Kentucky Chicken, etc., I presume) chain is the non-vegetarian, evil archenemy. Rowdy MBA (Raju Sundaram) is the gun-totting corporate henchman.

Quick Gun Murugan’s mantle is on Rajendra Prasad, the very popular comedy actor in the decades of eighties and nineties starting from Vamsy's Ladies Tailor (1985), who has more than 200 Telugu movies and few Tamil movies under his belt, before it is reshaped for Quick Gun Murugan’s heroics.

Now in theaters, Quick Gun Murugan, directed by Shashanka Ghosh, produced by Phat Phish Motion Pictures ad written by Rajesh Devraj, features also stars of the of like of Sandhya Mridul, Nassar, Raju Sundaram (as Rowdy MBA), Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak (as Chitragupta), Ashwin Mushran (Dr. Django), Rambha, Shanmugha Rajan (Gun Powder) and Anu Menon. The music is by Sagar Desai and Raghu Dixit, cinematography by R. A. Krishna, and distributed by Fox Star Pictures.

The film, a western spoof with attitude features wacky songs, high-octane melodrama and funny action sequences. It is based on a character originally developed at the time of the launch of the music network Channel [V] in 1994. The character popularized phrases like 'Mind it' and 'We are like this only'.

Quick Gun Murugan has been exhibited at the London Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, the New York Asian Film Festival and in The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Quick Gun Murugun’s duty is to protect the world against the restaurant owner, Rice Plate Reddy (Nassar), who wants to create the ultimate non-vegetarian dosa! The movie revolves around adventures of QGM along with his love to-be Mango Dolly (Rambha) and Locket Girl (Anu Menon aka Anuradha Menon who popularized Lola Kutty). QGM’s battles span from a small South Indian village, and then to Mumbai, spanning across 25 years.

This low-budget amateurish movie has the potential to become a cult film as it is liked by the young brigade of audience, particularly. The spoof Sambar Western (Rajendra Prasad; Quick Gun forever) is all for vegetarianism. He wants to save cows as they can be used as fillings for the nonveg dosa by Rice Plate Reddy. If you are looking for pure entertainment, you should not miss Quick Gun Murugan.

Bo Obama - The Most Famous Celebrity Pet

Bo Obama, the First Puppy of USA

This photo is the official portrait of the pet of the Obama family, the First Family of the United States, Bo Obama, a Portuguese Water Dog, on the South Lawn of the White House.

It was revealed on April 11, 2009 that the First Puppy Bo, the dog given to US President Barack Obama's two daughters Sasha and Malia by Senator Ted Kennedy (Edward Kennedy), was a Portuguese Water Dog. The girls have named the dog Bo since their cousins had a cat of the same name and because First Lady Michelle Obama’s father was nicknamed Diddley after the late musician Bo Diddley. The Obamas chose PWD because Malia has allergies and PWD is hypoallergenic, as claimed by pet lovers.

When President Obama announced he was looking for a dog for his daughters Sasha and Malia everyone sent in suggestions about what he should go for. Obama eventually accepted Bo as a gift from Edward Kennedy.

Incidentally Ted Kennedy (Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy, February 22, 1932 - August 25, 2009) was the owner of three Portuguese Water Dogs named Splash, Sunny and Cappy. Splash had served as the fictional narrator in Kennedy's children's book, My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington D.C.

Portuguese Water Dogs

The Portuguese Water Dog (Cão de Água Português with nicknames Portie, PWD, Water Dog) is a breed of working dog, originally from Portugal’s Algarve region, from where they spread to all around Portugal's coast and later to other parts of the world. In Portugal, the breed is known by names like Cão de Água, Cão de Água Algarvio, or Cão Pescador Português. Cão de Água de Pêlo Ondulado is the name given the wavy-haired variety of water dogs, and Cão de Água de Pêlo Encaracolado is the curly-coated variety.

PWD is a rare breed, a bit costly to be taken care of, non-shedding, and it requires extensive grooming and upkeep as its coat grows as does human hair. Like poodles and other water dog breeds, PWDs are highly intelligent, have webbed toes for swimming, black eyes, and their coats can be black, brown, black and white or brown and white.

As the hair on a PWD keeps growing indefinitely, they must be trimmed every two months and the coat brushed every other day. In addition to grooming costing $75 to $100 a session, this breed of dog requires daily exercise and consistently firm yet positive training techniques.

PWDs are quick learners, have sharp memories, they seem to enjoy the training process, and have lasting memory for instructions, the names of objects and people. Some PWDs may walk, hop, or dance on their hind legs when greeting people.

There are many theories on the origin of PWDs. One such theory claims that some of the dogs left the Asian steppes with the German tribes Goths, while the Ostrogoths went west and their dogs became the German poodle. Some others like the Visigoths went south to fight the Romans and their dogs became the Lion Dog. In 400 CE, the Visigoths invaded Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal, then known as Hispania) and the dogs found their homeland there.

The Portuguese Water Dog had its first description in 1297 in a monk’s account of a drowning sailor who was pulled out from the sea by a dog with a "black coat, the hair long and rough, cut to the first rib and with a tail tuft".

In modern times, Deyanne Miller is the person most responsible for the popularization of the PWD in America. In 1972, the Millers, along with 14 other people, formed the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America Inc. (PWDCA). She worked with dogs from both the Cintron and Cabral lineages to establish a sustained genetic pool of PWDs in the United States at her Farmion kennels. Another early US breeder of PWDs was actor Raymond Burr.

South Indian Actress Chaya Singh

Actress Chaya Singh photo
Chaya Singh, originally uploaded by TrumpCard.

Recently actress Chaya Singh has lashed out at irresponsible gossip mongers spreading rumours of her plan for marriage with a Hyderabad-based businessman saying she is so busy with her film assignments and reality show that she can not think about settling down in marriage.

'I'm surprised how the media got to know about my marriage, when I'm not even thinking about it. I'm too busy to think about marriage. I have loads of work to do,' Chaya, who is also judging a reality show on the Zee TV, told IANS.

Chaya came to know about her marriage rumours when her journalist friends called to congratulate her, after rumours appeared on some websites. For two to three days, she was flooded with calls and she kept denying the news, she said.

Currently Chaya Singh, who just finished working in a Malayalam film, has to finish her Tamil film 'Anthapuraththu Veedu', and she has signed a few Bengali films and also she is talking to some Bengali producers for new offers, she told the news agency. If she decides to get married, she will go with her parents' decision, she said. Chaya also wanted to direct a film called 'Gandhi Bazaar', but has now given up her plans as she cannot find a producer, because of recession, she says.

Once, in an interview with TNN in October 2006, Chaya said that she was not bothered about her screen image, whether she is being seen at the right places or making the right moves. Her only concern was doing good projects, she said. For example in the Kannada film Akasha Gange she played a young unwed mother, very different from the nice girl image she had sported till then in Kannada films.

Just when Chaya Singh was going great guns in Kannada film industry, she decided to make a foray into Tamil films. And she chose to sizzle without restraint in the hot number, Manmatha Rasa, in her debut film Thiruda Thirudi (2003). The lyrics were hot and the song went on to become a huge rage with the audience. But that popularity only led to her doing item numbers with Vikram and Vijay.

Chaya Singh stepped into Tamil cinema unexpectedly with a meaty role in Thiruda Thirudi, a big budget Tamil film directed by debutant Subramaniam Siva, starring Dhanush, Manicka Vinayagam, Ginja, Illavarasu, etc. The soundtrack was composed by Dhina, which was a great hit and the song, Manmatha Rasa, topped the charts for 15 weeks running. According to Chaya she hardly expected the song to be such a huge hit. But there it was, blaring all over Tamil Nadu. People started addressing her either by the character's name or ‘Manmada rani’. The film, a runaway success, was later remade in Telugu as Donga Dongadi with Manoj and Sadha in the lead roles.

After Thiruda Thirudi, Chaya Singh acted in the Tamil movie Solli Adippaen (2008) directed by S. A. C. Ramki and a Telugu movie Tirupachi. Solli Adippaen had comedian Vivek as the hero. According to her, she is rather choosy and not comfortable doing regular heroine roles. If you look at Thiruda Thirudi you will find that her role was not of regular heroine stuff. She wants to do characters that make a difference to the story, something that she will be remembered for.

Chaya Singh, who was born in Bangalore to parents from Uttar Pradesh, and had her schooling at Lourdes School, Bangalore, had acted in Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam films and she does not feel language is a barrier for her. And she does not find anything wrong in doing dance numbers or item numbers like the ones in Arul (2004). She feels it is always good to work with good actors and directors, and, if the song is good enough she might just end up doing more item numbers.

Chaya Singh does not feel it matters at all whether anyone is good looking or not for success in films. If looks had been everything, then Johnny Lever would never have made it to be a successful comedian in Bollywood, and actor Dhanush is not conventionally good looking either, she said in an interview with TNN.

Namitha in Jaganmohini

The audio of the Telugu version of the bilingual movie Jaganmohini, the remake of the yesteryear’s Telugu classic film Jaganmohini (1978), was recently launched at Prasad Labs, Hyderabad. D. Rama Naidu released the audio CD and presented the first copy to C. Kalyan. The celebrated music maestro Ilayaraja, as the music director, has composed music for the new version of Jaganmohini. The film is being made in Telugu and Tamil by producer H. Murali under the banner of Murali Cine Arts and directed by N.K. Viswanathan with Raja, Namitha and Meera Chopra (Nila), enacting the role that was done by Prabha and Raja steps in the place of Narasinha Raju. The music of the Tamil version was released earlier.

The original Jaganmohini was made in Telugu first. Later, it was dubbed in Tamil and it had a historic run for 375 days in Tamil Nadu, which was a much talked about record for a dubbed movie. There are many movie-lovers who saw that film several times. It was directed by Vithalacharya, writer Vennelakanti said.

Narasimha Raju, the hero in the original version, appears in the new version as the father of the hero. Gorgeous Namitha performs the character performed by Jayamalini in the original version. After a brief gap, Actress Nila, who is popular as Meera Chopra in Telugu, is back in the Tamil movie as the second heroine in Jaganmohini. Reportedly, the major attraction of the film will be the scene in which glamorous Namitha collecting pearls diving underwater in the sea.

Bond girl Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in Dr. No

Has Namitha’s harvesting pearls underwater inspired by the shell-collector enacted by the original Bond Girl Ursula Andress (as Honey Ryder) in Ian Fleming’s James Bond classic and the first Bond movie, Dr. No (1962), starring the original Bond, Sean Connery? The images of Ursula Andress collecting shells and, in a well-known scene of her rising out of the Caribbean Sea in a white bikini (see photo), is still circulated on the internet and they continue to be the most popular till date, more than any other scenes in any films in world cinema of any language, of all times. Can Namitha live up to that magic effect or repeat the stupendous success of Jayamalini in Indian cinema with her performance in the original Jaganmohini? We hope she can do that, or even better, as she is a dedicated performer as much as she is gorgeous!

The media recently caught a glimpse of the twelve different characters played by Priyanka Chopra in director Ashutosh Gowariker's Bollywood movie 'What's Your Raashee?' during the music launch which screened all the songs of the film. This has got everyone talking about the versatility and talents of Priyanka playing the twelve characters which is unparalleled not only n Indian cinema history, but also world cinema, including Hollywood, as neither any female actor has ever tried to do such an act nor could succeed in doing so. It is a world record in itself, as she played the twelve different characters successfully in a single film. It is praiseworthy Priyanka has enacted each character in a unique style just through her hair, make up, body language, style and dialogue delivery. It is also equally notable as she has not used any prosthetics for any of the characters and the portrayal of each character representing each of the twelve zodiac signs flawlessly.

Saranya Mohan, the girl next door

Saranya Mohan wallpaper
Saranya Mohan, originally uploaded by sureshmalcom.

“I will accept roles only where my character is well-etched. My well-defined character in Eeram should speak a lot for me”, said Saranya Mohan on the eve of release of her film Eeram. Saranya is currently busy with her Malayalam film ‘Chemistry’ that stars a bunch of new talents and it is expected that the project will further boost the acting career of this highly talented young actress.

Sharanya is well known with her current image of the girl next door, and she loves it too. She is quite choosy about picking her films and she gives more importance to storyline with substance, roles that can create a lasting impression in the minds of her audience. She is not after glamour, as she said. After Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu, Saranya is reportedly flooded with offers, but she is looking only for sensible scripts suiting her talent and without glamour. Once Saranya signs a film with a good script and suiting her image, she goes deep into the character and gives her hundred percent to make that character meaningful and that makes her films successful. She is a very dedicated performer, adding to her natural beauty and acting talents.

She was quite young when she portrayed the lovelorn girl who was chasing Dhanush in Yaaradi Nee Mohini, and she is still pursuing her studies. She is quite appreciative of the support and encouragement of her co-star Dhanush, and she credits her success as because of his encouragement. Miles to go for this young talent in the film industry and her fans are fully supportive of her dedication and talents. We can expect a lot more good films from this young talent in the coming years.
