A renowned panel of judges chose 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez, Miss Venezuela, as Miss Universe 2009 during a two-hour international television event televised live from Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas on August 23, 2009, according to news release from Miss Universe Organization.
Contestants from over 80 countries and territories competed for the coveted Miss Universe crown in three categories - swimsuit, evening gown and personality interview. Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, Miss Universe 2008, crowned her successor Stefania Fernandez at the conclusion of the two-hour telecast viewed by an estimated one billion viewers around the world.
